RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is a zoonotic pathogen that mainly causes local skin and soft tissue infections in the human body through cat and dog bites. It rarely causes bacteraemia (or sepsis) and meningitis. We reported a case of septic shock and meningitis caused by P. multocida in a patient without a history of cat and dog bites. CASE PRESENTATION: An 84-year-old male patient was urgently sent to the emergency department after he was found with unclear consciousness for 8 h, accompanied by limb tremors and urinary incontinence. In the subsequent examination, P. multocida was detected in the blood culture and wound secretion samples of the patient. However, it was not detected in the cerebrospinal fluid culture, but its DNA sequence was detected. Therefore, the patient was clearly diagnosed with septic shock and meningitis caused by P. multocida. The patient had no history of cat or dog contact or bite. The patient was subsequently treated with a combination of penicillin G, doxycycline, and ceftriaxone, and he was discharged after 35 days of hospitalisation. CONCLUSION: This report presented a rare case of septic shock and meningitis caused by P. multocida, which was not related to a cat or dog bite. Clinical doctors should consider P. multocida as a possible cause of sepsis or meningitis and should be aware of its potential seriousness even in the absence of animal bites.

RESUMEN

Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most common multidrug-resistant pathogens causing nosocomial infections. The prevalence of multidrug-resistant A. baumannii infections is increasing because of several factors, including unregulated antibiotic use. A. baumannii drug resistance rate is high; in particular, its resistance rates for tigecycline and polymyxin-the drugs of last resort for extensively drug-resistant A. baumannii-has been increasing annually. Patients with a severe infection of extensively antibiotic-resistant A. baumannii demonstrate a high mortality rate along with a poor prognosis, which makes treating them challenging. Through carbapenem enzyme production and other relevant mechanisms, A. baumannii has rapidly acquired a strong resistance to carbapenem antibiotics-once considered a class of strong antibacterials for A. baumannii infection treatment. Therefore, understanding the resistance mechanism of A. baumannii is particularly crucial. This review summarizes mechanisms underlying common antimicrobial resistance in A. baumannii, particularly those underlying tigecycline and polymyxin resistance. This review will serve as a reference for reasonable antibiotic use at clinics, as well as new antibiotic development.

RESUMEN

As an inland dryland lake basin, the rivers and lakes within the Lake Bosten basin provide scarce but valuable water resources for a fragile environment and play a vital role in the development and sustainability of the local societies. Based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, combined with the geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technology, we used the index WI2019 to extract and analyze the water body area changes of the Bosten Lake basin from 2000 to 2021 when the threshold value is -0.25 and the slope mask is 8°. The driving factors of water body area changes were also analyzed using the partial least squares-structural equation model (PLS-SEM). The result shows that in the last 20 years, the area of water bodies in the Bosten Lake basin generally fluctuated during the dry, wet, and permanent seasons, with a decreasing trend from 2000 to 2015 and an increasing trend between 2015 and 2019 followed by a steadily decreasing trend afterward. The main driver of the change in wet season water bodies in the Bosten Lake basin is the climatic factors, with anthropogenic factors having a greater influence on the water body area of dry season and permanent season than that of wet season. Our study achieved an accurate and convenient extraction of water body area and drivers, providing up-to-date information to fully understand the spatial and temporal variation of surface water body area and its drivers in the basin, which can be used to effectively manage water resources.

RESUMEN

Transcutaneous energy-harvesting technology based on ultrasound-driven piezoelectric nanogenerators is the most promising technology in medical and industrial applications. Based on ultrasonic coupling effects at the interfaces, the interfacial architecture is a critical parameter to attain desirable electromechanical properties of nanocomposites. Herein, we successfully synthesized core-conductive shell-structured BaTiO3@Carbon [BT@Carbon] nanoparticles [NPs] as nanofillers to design implantable poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene)/BT@Carbon [P(VDF-CTFE)/BT@Carbon] piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) and actuators for harvesting ultrasound (US) underneath the skin. For US-driven PENGs, the electrons and holes are generated not only from the interfaces between the BT@Carbon NPs and the matrix, but also from the dipoles vibrating in the smaller lamellae of ferroelectric ß-phase crystals in poled nanocomposites. Remarkably, P(VDF-CTFE)/BT@Carbon piezoelectric nanogenerators could attain an extraordinary output power of 521 µW cm-2 under ultrasound stimulation, which is far greater than that of force-induced PVDF-based nanogenerators and other ultrasound-driven triboelectric generators. Furthermore, the US-PENG actuator system, which is composed of an amplifier and a microcontroller, could efficiently convert ultrasonic energy into electricity or instructions to switch on/off small electronics in the tissues and organs of mice. Finally, the nanocomposite-based US-driven PENGs have a good biocompatibility, with no cytotoxicity or immune response in vivo, indicating their potential for developing wireless power generators and actuators for medical implant devices.

RESUMEN

This study analyzed the spatial-temporal change pattern and underlying factors in production-living-ecological space (PLES) of Nanchong City, China, over the past 20 years using historical land use data (2000, 2010, 2020). A land use transfer matrix was calculated from the historical land use maps, and spatial analysis was conducted to analyze changes in the land use dynamics degree, standard deviation ellipse, and center of gravity. The results showed that there was a rapid spatial evolution of the PLES in Nanchong from 2000 to 2010, followed by a stabilization in the second decade. The transfer of ecological-production space occurred mainly in the Jialing and Yilong River basins, while the reduction of production space and the increase of living space were most prominent in the intersection of three districts (Shunqing, Jialing, and Gaoping districts). The return of production-ecological space was observed in the south and northeast of Yingshan, and there was little notable transfer of other types. The distribution of production space in Nanchong evolved in a north-south to east-west trend, with the center of gravity moving from Yilong to Peng'an County. The living space and production space expanded in a north-south direction, and the center of gravity position was in Nanbu, indicating a more balanced growth or decrease in the last 20 years. The changes in the spatial-temporal pattern of PLES in Nanchong were attributed to the intertwined factors of national policies, economic development, population growth, and the natural environment. This study introduced a novel approach towards rational planning of land resources in Nanchong, which may facilitate more sustainable urban planning and development.

RESUMEN

Grassland degradation poses a serious threat to biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being. In this study, we investigated grassland degradation in Zhaosu County, China, between 2001 and 2020, and analyzed the impacts of climate change and human activities using the Miami model. The actual net primary productivity (ANPP) obtained with CASA (Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach) modeling, showed a decreasing trend, reflecting the significant degradation that the grasslands in Zhaosu County have experienced in the past 20 years. Grassland degradation was found to be highest in 2018, while the degraded area continuously decreased in the last 3 years (2018-2020). Climatic factors for found to be the dominant factor affecting grassland degradation, particularly the decrease in precipitation. On the other hand, human activities were found to be the main factor affecting improvement of grasslands, especially in recent years. This finding profoundly elucidates the underlying causes of grassland degradation and improvement and helps implement ecological conservation and restoration measures. From a practical perspective, the research results provide an important reference for the formulation of policies and management strategies for sustainable land use.

RESUMEN

To meet the strong demand for high-level encryption security, several efforts have been focused on developing new encryption techniques with high density and data security. Herein we employed a template-free electron beam lithography (EBL) technique to write various nanopatterns on poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)) films and applied it to electron-beam/electric multiplexing memory. Furthermore, electron beams can arbitrarily tailor down the domain structure evolutions and dipole directions, as proved by a combination of AFM-IR and PFM. Finally, our devices could function concurrently as an electron-beam write-only-memory (EB-WOM) and FeRAM, where the information could be encoded with the metastable phase evolutions from the ferroelectric phase to the paraelectric phase and variable bi-level ferroelectric signals. Our systematic study provides an inspiring idea for the design of information encryption devices with high-security requirements in flexible electronic fields.

RESUMEN

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) occupies a critical part in biogeochemistry and energy flux of aquatic ecosystems. CDOM research spans in many fields, including chemistry, marine environment, biomass cycling, physics, hydrology, and climate change. In recent years, a series of remarkable research milestone have been achieved. On the basis of reviewing the research process of CDOM, combined with a bibliometric analysis, this study aims to provide a comprehensive review of the development and applications of remote sensing in monitoring CDOM from 2003 to 2022. The findings show that remote sensing data plays an important role in CDOM research as proven with the increasing number of publications since 2003, particularly in China and the United States. Primary research areas have gradually changed from studying absorption and fluorescence properties to optimization of remote sensing inversion models in recent years. Since the composition of oceanic and freshwater bodies differs significantly, it is important to choose the appropriate inversion method for different types of water body. At present, the monitoring of CDOM mainly relies on a single sensor, but the fusion of images from different sensors can be considered a major research direction due to the complex characteristics of CDOM. Therefore, in the future, the characteristics of CDOM will be studied in depth inn combination with multi-source data and other application models, where inversion algorithms will be optimized, inversion algorithms with low dependence on measured data will be developed, and a transportable inversion model will be built to break the regional limitations of the model and to promote the development of CDOM research in a deeper and more comprehensive direction.

RESUMEN

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the brackish Ebinur Lake of arid northwest China profoundly affect its water quality and watershed habitat quality. However, the actual driving mechanisms of the Lake's SPM changes remain unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the controlling factors driving the variability of SPM in the Ebinur Lake. This study constructed month-by-month SPM maps of Ebinur Lake based on time-series remote-sensing imageries and SPM inversion model. Thirty-four factors that might influence SPM changes were extracted, and the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), suitable for complex relationships and factor interactions, was applied to identify the relative influence of each factor quantitatively. The results showed: (1) a clear increasing trend of SPM concentration in Ebinur Lake from 2011 to 2020; (2) that SPM changes were influenced by external and internal factors, explaining 48.2 % and 46.9 % of the changes, respectively; (3) that, to the external factors, meteorological factors exerted the greatest influence on SPM (relative contribution of 38.9 %); that, to the internal factors, water salinity imposed the greatest influence on SPM (relative contribution of 43.3 %); (4) that, among the meteorological factors, the measured variable Alashankou wind speed expressed the most significant positive effect on SPM (weighting coefficient of 0.894), and sulfate generated the strongest positive effect on SPM (weighting coefficient of 0.791) among the water salinity factors. Hence, the quantitative identification of drivers of SPM changes in Ebinur Lake could provide a new perspective to investigate the driving mechanisms of lake water quality in arid areas and inform their sustainable restoration and management.

RESUMEN

GuiLingJi (GLJ), a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula, is composed of over 20 herbs, according to the Pharmacopeia of the People's Republic of China. Owing to its various activities, GLJ has been used in clinical settings for more than 400 years in China. However, the ambiguous chemical material basis limits the development of studies on the quality control and pharmacological mechanisms of GLJ. Therefore, comprehensive characterization of the multiple chemical components of GLJ is of great significance for the modernization of this formula. Given the great variety of herbs in GLJ, both UHPLC-MS and 1H NMR techniques were employed in this study. In addition, solvent extraction with different polarities was used to eliminate signal interference and the concentration of trace components. A variety of MS analytic methods were also used, including implementation of a self-built compound database, diagnostic ion filtering, mass defect filtering, and Compound Discoverer 3.0 analysis software. Based on the above strategies, a total of 150 compounds were identified, including 5 amino acids, 13 phenolic acids and glycosides, 11 coumarins, 72 flavones, 20 triterpenoid and triterpenoid saponins, 23 fatty acids, and 6 other compounds. Moreover, 13 compounds were identified by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The UHPLC-MS and 1H NMR results supported and complemented each other. This strategy provides a rapid approach to analyzing and identifying the chemical composition of Chinese herbal prescriptions. The current study provides basis for further research on the quality control and pharmacological mechanism of GLJ.

RESUMEN

Good surface water quality is critical to human health and ecology. Land use determines the surface water heat and material balance, which cause climate change and affect water quality. There are many factors affecting water quality degradation, and the process of influence is complex. As rivers, lakes, and other water bodies are used as environmental receiving carriers, evaluating and quantifying how impacts occur between land use types and surface water quality is extremely important. Based on the summary of published studies, we can see that (1) land use for agricultural and construction has a negative impact on surface water quality, while woodland use has a certain degree of improvement on surface water quality; (2) statistical methods used in relevant research mainly include correlation analysis, regression analysis, redundancy analysis, etc. Different methods have their own advantages and limitations; (3) in recent years, remote sensing monitoring technology has developed rapidly, and has developed into an effective tool for comprehensive water quality assessment and management. However, the increase in spatial resolution of remote sensing data has been accompanied by a surge in data volume, which has caused difficulties in information interpretation and other aspects.

RESUMEN

Surface water provides a basic resource for life and is vital for maintaining climate stability, hydrological cycles, and natural ecosystems. Lakes, which are an important part of surface water, play a crucial role in sustaining the hydrological balance and maintaining a healthy environment. The onset of climate change and anthropogenic disturbance on lakes and the environment, however, have drastically changed the morphological characteristics of lakes, leading to undesirable negative effects on the ecological environment. In recent years, many lakes around the world are undergoing phenomenal changes due to climate change and human activities. These changes have greatly affected the availability of freshwater resources, leading to a series of regional ecological and environmental problems, which constrain the regional sustainable development. Changes in lake parameters often indicate environmental change. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to extract lake water information to reflect the water quantity changes in the lake, understand its implications, and come up with timely solutions. This paper summarizes the existing research methods of lake water estimation in China and abroad and draws the following conclusions: (1) In the study of lake water volume estimation, it can be roughly divided into with topographic data and without topographic data. The most representative methods are the estimation methods based on topographic parameters and the Triangle Irregular Network (TIN) model method. In the actual research process, most of the scarce data that are difficult to obtain are lake topographic data, prompting researchers to constantly put forward new methods; (2) From the perspective of research methods, estimation of lake water volume can be divided into remote sensing-based and non-remote sensing-based research. With the continuous improvement of scientific and technological levels, current geographical researchers tend to use remote sensing to monitor lake water volume; (3) Although researchers have proposed a series of models for lake water volume estimation for the long-time process. However, many models are based on the ideal static estimation process, which poses challenges for researchers to make a long-term dynamic estimation of lake storage capacity in the future. At the same time, the accuracy of the model can be a problem that researchers need to work out solutions in the future. Finally, combined with the current development of remote sensing technology, the application potential and the future prospect of remote sensing in lake monitoring are briefly discussed.

RESUMEN

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Guilingji (GLJ), which has been used to treat male diseases in China for centuries, contains 28 Chinese herbs and was previously established as an effective treatment for male sexual dysfunction. However, its mechanism of action remains unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: To explore the efficacy and mechanism of action of GLJ in improving senile sexual dysfunction (SSD) in aging rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An aging rat model of SSD was induced by the subcutaneous injection of d-galactose (300 mg⋅kg-1) and used to analyse the effects of GLJ (different concentrations of 37.5, 75, and 150 mg⋅kg-1) on the mating of aging rats. At the end of the 8th week, histopathological analysis of testicular tissues, assessment of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis hormone levels in serum or brain, and metabonomics analysis of the brain and testicular tissue with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was performed to explore the mechanism of action of GLJ. RESULT: After treatment with GLJ, the mount and ejaculation latency levels were increased in the treatment group than those in model group (P < 0.05), moreover, the testicular morphology was improved. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels in rats were also improved significant (P < 0.05) compared with those in the model group. Furthermore, the metabonomics results in the testicular and brain tissue showed that GLJ improved SSD by adjusting amino acid and lipid metabolism. CONCLUSION: This study integrated the complementary metabolic profiles of the target tissues. GLJ might affect SSD rats by regulating amino acid and lipid metabolism and may modulate sensitivity to the signaling pathway in the HPG axis. This study provides an essential basis for the broad clinical application of GLJ.

RESUMEN

Societal and technological advances have triggered demands to improve urban environmental quality. Urban green space (UGS) can provide effective cooling service and thermal comfort to alleviate warming impacts. We investigated the relative influence of a comprehensive spectrum of UGS landscape and vegetation factors on surface temperature in arid Urumqi city in northwest China. Built-up area range was extracted from Luojia 1-01 (LJ1-01) satellite data, and within this range, the landscape metric information and vegetation index information of UGS were obtained based on PlanetScope data, and a total of 439 sampling grids (1 km × 1 km) were generated. The urban surface temperature of built-up areas was extracted from Landsat8-TIRS images. The 12 landscape metrics and 14 vegetation indexes were assigned as independent variables, and surface temperature the dependent variable. Support Vector Machine (SVM), Gradient Boost Regression Tree (GBRT) and Random Forest (RF) were enlisted to establish numerical models to predict surface temperature. The results showed that: (1) It was feasible to predict local surface temperature using a combination of landscape metrics and vegetation indexes. Among the three models, RF demonstrated the best accuracy. (2) Collectively, all the factors play a role in the surface-temperature prediction. The most influential factor was Difference Vegetation Index (DVI), followed by Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI), Class Area (CA) and AREA. This study developed remote sensing techniques to extract a basket of UGS factors to predict the surface temperature at local urban sites. The methods could be applied to other cities to evaluate the cooling impacts of green infrastructures. The findings could provide a scientific basis for ecological spatial planning of UGS to optimize cooling benefits in the arid region.

RESUMEN

UPLC-Q-Orbitrap MS/MS and ICP-MS coupled with multivariate statistical analysis was employed to explore the differences in chemical compositions of Guilingji(GLJ) before and after alchemy. The changes in organic chemical compositions and inorganic elements were observed and 39 differential organic compositions were found in GLJ after alchemy, 24 compounds of which were identified. The differential compositions of GLJ included violet ketones, chalcones, amides, and fatty acids whose contents were increased after alchemy, as well as flavones, isoflavones, dihydroflavones, flavonoid glycosides, and coumarins whose content were decreased after alchemy. This study showed 6 inorganic elements filtered out as markers for distinguishing GLJ before and after alchemy, including B, Si, Mg, K, Cr, and Ni.The contents of Mg, K, Cr and Ni were increased while the contents of B and Si were decreased after alchemy. The difference of the contents after alchemy changed the cold and hot properties of the compound, showing the decrease of dryness, and the hot property was changed to warm and neutral properties; in addition, the membrane permeability and absorption of the compound compositions were improved. In this study, we preliminarily investigated the changes of chemical compositions in GLJ before and after alchemy as well as the effects of alchemy on physical and chemical properties and cold-heat nature of GLJ, laying a foundation for further clarifying the scientific connotation of alchemy process.
